Protecting Sites

Some sites are particularly important for birds, either because they contain a key population of a threatened or declining species, or because they are critical breeding, wintering or stopover places for migrating birds.
From a conservation perspective, discreet sites also have two important advantages over largescale landscapes - they are usually owned or managed by a single entity, and, if the will is there, can often be protected in the form of a reserve, park, or refuge. A key aspect of site conservation is the ability to identify which places are most in need of protection, and then to work with existing landowners and partners to find ways of protecting them. ABC has worked domestically to identify over 500 sites that contain globally significant populations of key species, and has also worked as a leading member of the Alliance for Zero Extinction to identify sites around the world that are the last refuges for one or more endangered species.
ABC also actively engages in the conservation of sites, both in the United States and throughout Latin America, to ensure that populations of conservation-dependent bird species continue to survive and thrive.
